In 2025, Panthera registered as an international non-governmental organization in Tanzania. The organization’s operations center on the conservation environment of western Tanzania, where we will support wildlife monitoring initiatives and offer local partners financial, logistical, and technical protection support.

Overview

The Field Scientist will assist in organizing and overseeing the implementation of Panthera-supported ecological and animal monitoring initiatives in western Tanzania. The position will include data administration, logistical coordination, and field-based data collection (mostly camera trap and spoor surveys). Supporting reporting, communicating with partners, and participating in scientific outputs are additional duties. Opportunities for professional development in applied ecology and conservation are provided by this role, including field-based mentorship and training seminars.

With frequent and prolonged travel to Protected Areas in western Tanzania, the position is based in Tabora. It might be necessary to make occasional trips to Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and abroad.

 Responsibilities & duties

  • Work with the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) and other pertinent partners to plan, carry out, and oversee camera trap surveys, spoor surveys, and other wildlife monitoring initiatives. This covers inventory control, equipment preparation, logistics, and survey design.
  • Oversee the data gathered in the field using SMART, African Carnivore Wildbook, Panthera’s Integrated Data System (IDS), and locally.
  • After being trained by senior Panthera professionals, analyze data from camera traps and other sources.
  • Create summaries of survey and analytical results in reports and presentations.
  • During field operations, coordinate with partners and stakeholders, including by training partners as needed.
  • Encourage the development of relationships with important stakeholders by participating in meetings and communicating on a regular basis.
  • Create summary reports and meeting minutes.

Qualifications, experience and personality traits

  • A bachelor’s degree in ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, natural resources management, or a similar discipline is necessary; a postgraduate degree is desirable.
  • Shown ability to organize fieldwork for conservation or research projects.
  • Extensive fieldwork expertise in Tanzania’s remote protected areas, along with a track record of success in planning and logistics.
  • Preferably, hands-on expertise with camera traps and other wildlife monitoring equipment.
  • The capacity and willingness to labor for extended periods of time in difficult, remote settings with little to no phone or internet connectivity.
  • Familiarity with reporting expenses and managing budgets.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Fundamental database administration and GIS abilities.
  • Knowledge of R and related analytical tools, especially occupancy modeling and capture-recapture (recommended).
