Established under the Institute of Social Work Act [Cap 110 R.E 2002], which was later revised by the written Laws (Miscellaneous modifications) (No. 3) Act of 2002, the Institute of Social Work is a higher education institution in Tanzania. The Act is referred to here as the Act.

The Institute launched a certificate program in labor studies in 1982 and an advanced diploma in labor studies in 1990 to address the need for trained labor inspectors, administrators, and industrial relations officers across the country. The Institute’s introduction of a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and Certificate and Advanced Diploma programs in Human Resource Management in 2002 signaled further advancement.

A Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Mediation, and Arbitration was also introduced in 2004. Additionally, in 2006–07, the Institute offered Bachelor Degrees (National Technical Award Level 8) and Ordinary Diplomas (National Technical Award Level 6) in all of its subject areas. In 2013–14, the Institute added Postgraduate Diplomas in Strategic Human Resource Management and Health System Management.

Entry Requirements

1. Basic Technician Certificate Programmes – (NTA Level 4)

• Minimum Requirements for Admission: The candidate must have passed the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) four times or more, excluding religious subjects. or The applicant must have a certificate from an institution approved by NACTE or NVA Level 3 for at least six (6) months.

2. Ordinary Diploma Programmes – (NTA Level 5&6)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

• Direct Entry: The candidate must have at least one (1) principal pass and a subsidiary in two relevant subjects totaling at least 1.5 points (i.e., at least one E and S) on the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE). The candidate also has to have four (4) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) credits.
• Equivalent Entry: A Basic Technician Certificate with a GPA of 2.0 from a NACTE-approved school. The candidate must also have passed the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) four times. or a Certificate of Education (Grade III A) with a C average from NACTE-accredited schools, or a Certificate in Nursing/Midwifery and equivalent courses. The candidate must also have passed the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) at least four times.

3. Bachelor Degree Programmes – (NTA Level 7- 8)

• Completed A-level coursework prior to 2014: Admission to the relevant program is determined by two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points from two topics (where A=5; B=4; C=3; D=2; E=1).
• Completed coursework for A-levels in 2014 and 2015: Admission to the appropriate program is determined by two principal passes (two Cs) with a total of 4.0 points from two topics (where A=5; B+=4; B=3; C=2; D=1). In this category, a grade of “D” is not regarded as a principal pass.
• A-level coursework completed in 2016: Two principal passes with a combined score of 4.0 points from two topics indicate entrance to the corresponding program.
• Acknowledgment of previous learning: B+ Grade: where A = 75-100; B+ = 65-74; B = 50-64; C = 40-49; D = 35-39; F = 0-38.
• Candidates with equal qualifications must have at least four (4) O-level passes (Ds and above), an NVA level III with fewer than four O-level passes, or comparable international credentials as determined by VETA or NECTA.

4. Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

• The applicant must meet the minimum requirements for admission, which include having a Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in a related discipline or its equivalent in social science with a passing mark.

5. Master Degree Programme (NTA Level 9)

• One-year program: Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work or Advanced Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a GPA of 2.7. Only the Advanced Modules, which are worth 120 credits, will need to be completed by applicants in this category.
• Two-year program: Bachelor’s or advanced diploma in social sciences, particularly in education, psychology, sociology, health sciences, community development, or any other relevant field with a GPA of 2.7. Additionally, applicants in this category (those without a history in social work) must complete both the Foundation and Advanced Modules, which total 260 credits.
